In this digital age with its emphasis on email, mobile phones and Facetime, Postcrossing may seem like a bizarre concept. Postcrossing, in essence, is the hobby of sending real, live, honest-to-goodness, wish-you-were-here picture postcards to random people anywhere in the world.
To be fair, I suppose the recipients are not entirely randomly chosen. They are self-selecting having first registered at the website www.postcrossing.com. It's a surprisingly popular hobby with nearly 10,000 participants in the UK, and more than 46,000 in the US. I currently have 7 postcards travelling through the postal system, which means there will also be seven on their way to me. Watch this space for more information. |
